Every now and then, I get a patient that is just weary because they have taken forever to even know that a doctor in my specialty, Allergy-Immunology, is the one they should be seeing. Conversely, very rarely a patient will come in and I can help them with many issues but not really the one that bothered them the most and brought them through my door.
For this reason, I thought it would be helpful to review some similarities and differences.
Allergist-Immunologists are the ultimate specialist for anything allergy and immunology-related. Allergists-Immunologists treat allergic and immunologic diseases in the lung, skin, ear, nose, throat and sinuses in a medical, non-surgical way. We also see patients who are having drug allergies, environmental allergies, vaccine allergies, animal allergies, food allergies, and contact allergies, to name a few. We do see asthma and are especially skilled at allergic asthma.
As you know from previous blogs, allergies are an overreaction of the immune system to otherwise harmless substances, like pollen or dog dander, that causes at minimum annoying symptoms and in the worst-case scenario, can be life-threatening.
Dermatologists are skin specialists. They are experts in all forms of skin disease, including skin cancer. Both Allergist-Immunologists and Dermatologists treat eczema (or atopic dermatitis), hives (or urticaria), and contact dermatitis (allergy from contact with the skin). Sometimes we work together on these cases, especially the tough ones.
Otolaryngologists (ENTs) are surgeons of the ear, nose, face, sinuses, and throat. They resolve structural issues and help remove cancer from these areas with surgery.
Both Allergist-Immunologists and ENTs treat sinusitis and nasal polyps. Sometimes we work together with ENTs, especially in complex situations.
Pulmonologists are lung specialists. A Pulmonologist can perform a bronchoscopy, which is a procedure that can help the doctor look into the lung and retrieve tissue or cultures if necessary to make a diagnosis and takes care of patients in the ICU.
Both Allergist-Immunologists and Pulmonologists treat asthma, other types of lung allergies, and frequent infections in the lung. Sometimes we work together with Pulmonologists, especially in situations that are complicated or involve recurrent, severe allergies or infections.
