Allergy Shots Q&A

What are allergy shots?

Allergy shots, or immunotherapy, at Relieve Allergy, Asthma & Hives are procedures that decrease your body’s sensitivity to allergies, thereby reducing troublesome symptoms. The treatment works by gradually exposing the body to increasing doses of allergens over time.

What are allergy shots used for?

Allergy shots help reduce bothersome allergy symptoms, including:

  • Watery eyes
  • Itchy eyes, nose, or ears
  • Nasal congestion
  • Runny nose
  • Postnasal drip
  • Red eyes
  • Cough
  • Sore throat
  • Sneezing
  • Cold-like symptoms
  • Swollen eyes
  • Difficulty sleeping
  • Hay fever
  • Nose allergies
  • Eye allergies
  • Hives
  • Chronic sinusitis
  • Allergic asthma
  • Itchy skin
  • Skin rashes
  • Allergic eczema
  • Ear popping
  • Muffled sounds

Children who suffer from allergies might not sleep well or pick their noses often.

You or your child may be allergic to dust, pollen, molder, pet dander, insect stings, latex, certain medications, or specific foods. This means that your body reacts negatively when exposed to such substances.

Are allergy shots right for me?

Your Relieve Allergy, Asthma & Hives provider determines if you’re a candidate for allergy shots after discussing your medical history, symptoms, treatment preferences, and lifestyle habits.  Before customizing your treatment, they complete a physical exam and may recommend blood testing, skin prick tests, patch testing, lung-function tests, or other diagnostic procedures.

While they don’t work for everyone, allergy shots are up to 97% effective and entirely safe.

What should I expect when receiving allergy shots?

When receiving allergy shots, simply make an appointment and head to the Relieve Allergy, Asthma & Hives office. Your provider gently injects substances into your body while you relax. Temporary side effects may include redness, irritation, or swelling at the injection site.

During a build-up phase, you might receive a shot weekly or multiple times per week for up to six months. Your provider gradually increases allergen doses during the visits.

Over time, you can expect your symptoms to gradually decrease. The maintenance phase may include monthly shots for up to five years. Your allergist determines when to schedule your next allergy shot. They tailor each allergy treatment to your personalized needs.

Schedule an appointment at Relieve Allergy, Asthma & Hives by phone or online today to learn more about allergy shots and if they’re right for you.
