Here are some tips to keep your July 4th festive and fun, rather than sick with allergies and asthma.
- Avoid triggers if you have asthma: smoke from BBQs and fires, the smoke from fireworks, bug repellant candles and torches, perfume and scents from crowded people, and dust can all make your asthma worse. Allergies can also be a problem, see below.
- Know the pollen count! We covered this in our May 12th blog, about pollen.com. Take a look back at how to use this website. If your trigger pollens are out, limit your time in them and take your medication.
- Take your emergency medication with you, whether it be an epinephrine auto-injector, antihistamine medication, or rescue inhaler. If you know you are going to be in a situation that might be a problem, consider using the rescue inhaler and/or taking antihistamines before you go but don’t forget to pack more in case you have a problem.
- Avoid wearing perfume, scented products, hairspray and wearing brightly colored, patterned, or flowered clothing to keep those stinging insects away. Keep away from discarded food and drinks. Remove it from your immediate area as soon as you are done eating and drinking. Keep control of your can of pop—more than one patient has been stung on the lips from a bee that slipped into their sugary can. Rotting or half-eaten fruit can also be an attractant and should be avoided.
- Keep away from any food that may contain your food allergies. Even a little can be a problem for you. ALWAYS have your epinephrine autoinjector with you if you are eating.
