The Singapore Preconception Study of Long-Term Maternal and Child Outcomes (S-Presto), presented at the 2024 American Academy of Allergy, Asthma & Immunology meeting by Elizabeth Tham, the studies first author, has had some exciting results. By profiling the natural moisturizing factors of the skin and the skin carriage of certain bacterial species, it was able to predict those infants who were more likely to go on to develop atopic dermatitis.
This means that simple, conservative measures, known to reduce the risk eczema later, can be used early on and by using these targeted strategies early in life, the risk of atopic dermatitis (eczema) may be reduced.
