Patients that were given proton pump inhibitors (PPIs) in infancy had up to 6-fold increase in food allergy and anaphylaxis compared with those patients that did not require proton pump inhibitors. This data was presented at the 2024 American Academy of Allergy, Asthma & Immunology meeting by Julia Tanzo and Dr. Mohamad Chaaban. This same trend has previously been shown for antimicrobials.
PPIs are drugs designed to reduce the production of acid by the stomach. They are used for conditions such as gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), conditions in which the stomach produces too much acid, stomach and small bowel ulcers, and for esophagus inflammation.
Below is a table of PPIs. Add this to the list of ways we can be preventing food allergy and anaphylaxis.
