As previously predicted, it is a very severe spring for allergies!  Patients have mobbed our clinic for help, and they are early this year.

Why is the Phoenix and Scottsdale area so severe?

  • Factors that contribute include:
  • Dust storms and wind that keep allergens aloft for longer, making them more likely to be inhaled
  • Dry climate, which keeps the pollens airborne for longer
  • Limited rain, which acts to clean the air and takes pollen out of it
  • Warm temperature, which increases the length of pollination season
  • Presence of some superstar pollen producers, like Bermuda grass, mesquite, mulberry, palo verde, and ragweed, all of which are highly allergenic

Unfortunately, climate data has shown that the trend is for pollen to continue to increase, as it has for more than 3 decades.  But before you pack your bags and hightail it out of town, understand that this trend has been shown to be nationwide.

In my opinion, this is the earliest and worst spring in the 2 decades I’ve lived in Arizona.  This is NOT all in your head.
