What is eczema and how can you treat it?
Eczema is a common skin condition that causes red, itchy, and inflamed skin. It is also known as atopic dermatitis and can occur at any age. Eczema is often triggered by an overactive immune response to irritants such as soaps, detergents, or certain fabrics. There is no cure for eczema, but treatments such as moisturizers, topical steroids, and immunomodulators can help manage symptoms and prevent flares. Eczema testing involves examining the skin and performing allergy tests to identify triggers that may cause or exacerbate eczema symptoms. The skin may be visually examined, and a patch or prick test may be done to detect allergens that can cause an allergic reaction. Blood tests may also be used to identify allergies or other conditions that can affect the skin.
Testing can help identify triggers and inform treatment options, such as avoiding allergens or using specific medications. Allergy treatments depend on the type and severity of the allergy. Here are some commonly used treatments:
Avoidance: This involves identifying and avoiding allergens that trigger an allergic reaction, such as pollen, dust mites, or certain foods.
Medications: Antihistamines, decongestants, and corticosteroids can help relieve allergy symptoms such as itching, sneezing, and congestion.
Immunotherapy: Also known as allergy shots, this treatment involves regular injections of small amounts of allergens to gradually desensitize the immune system and reduce the severity of allergic reactions.
Alternative therapies: Some people use natural remedies such as herbal supplements, acupuncture, or probiotics to help alleviate allergy symptoms, but the effectiveness of these treatments is not scientifically proven.
New treatments, both creams that are nonsteroidal and biologic therapy that target and control the overreactive immune system are very effective at controlling moderate to severe eczema, eczema that is affecting quality of life, and eczema of the hands, feet, and face, which have formerly been hard to control.
