Xolair (omalizumab) has become the “go-to” allergy drug of the century.  It recognizes serum Immunoglobulin E, IgE, what I call the allergic flag, because this is how the body specifically recognizes allergies and because it looks like a little flag when you see it under an electron microscope.

  • Xolair is currently indicated for:
  • Moderate to severe allergic asthma in patients > 6 years old
  • Chronic Rhinosinusitis with Nasal polyposis > 18 years old
  • IgE-mediated food allergy > 1 year old
  • Chronic spontaneous urticaria > 12 years old

The latest indication is for prevention of serious anaphylaxis from food allergy.  Some of us are hoping that it will have an indication for helping patients through food oral immunotherapy without anaphylaxis. This is one step forward in demonstrating the awesome ability of this drug to ameliorate an intense allergic response.
