The FDA-approval of omalizumab (Xolair) for food allergies has been a profound game-changer for patients, especially children with food allergy.
Food allergies, as you know from reading my previous blogs, can be profoundly life-threatening. Even if anaphylaxis does not result in death, they are frightening and at the very least, traumatic for parent and child alike.
It is now possible to give a little extra protection with the medication omalizumab. With this medication, patients can tolerate small amounts of their allergic food, in cases of accidental ingestion for example. Omalizumab does not cause remission of food allergies and is therefore not a cure, with the allergy returning in full force once the omalizumab is stopped.
It is only appropriate for immediate-type allergy, such as anaphylaxis, and not for non-IgE mediated allergies such as celiac disease, Heiner’s syndrome, eosinophilic esophagitis, and food protein-induced enterocolitis.
The perfect use is when the allergic child goes to school or daycare and parents, and the child does not understand the implications of their allergy or cannot speak for themselves.
Omalizumab is a drug that has been around for a while, currently indicated for chronic idiopathic urticaria, or hives, allergic asthma, and chronic rhinosinusitis with nasal polyps.
