What are nasal polyps?
Nasal polyps are non-cancerous, painless growths of the sinus mucosa. They can obstruct the sinus and nasal passages and even grow out the nose! I once had a patient that joked that she was going to hang Christmas ornaments from hers when they started poking out her nose.
What are the symptoms of nasal polyps?
Runny, stuffy nose, postnasal drip, frequent sinus infections, difficulty breathing through the nose, difficulty smelling and tasting, facial pain and pressure, headache and snoring
How are nasal polyps treated?
- Steroids (both topical in the form of nasal sprays) and systemic (taken by mouth or infected) can help shrink the tissue fast.
- Surgery can be used to remove them although they can grow back unless prevented from returning (see below).
- Dupilumab (dupixent) and Omalizumab (Xolair) are very effective at reducing size of polyps and preventing regrowth.
How can I prevent regrowth of polyps?
- Manage allergies (people with allergies and allergic asthma are more likely to have polyps)
- Avoid irritants
- Use a nasal rinse
- Treat sinus infections
- Use topical steroid regularly
- Take prescribed Antihistamines, antileukotrienes and allergy shots regularly
